The part most PLM plans skip

Every Windchill roadmap talks about the digital thread, the ERP integration, the change process. Almost none of them start where the engineers start: the moment someone checks in a model.

That moment is where adoption is decided. If check-in is slow, if references break, if the family table explodes, if the drawing doesn't publish — engineers conclude the system costs them time, and they quietly go back to the shared drive. Everything downstream of that — BOM accuracy, change control, the handoff to manufacturing — inherits the failure, because the data feeding it was never in the system to begin with.

The CAD connection isn't a detail of a Windchill implementation. It's the foundation the rest stands on.

What we actually do

Creo + Windchill, done natively

Creo and Windchill are built for each other, but "built for each other" is not "configured correctly by default." We set up the pieces that decide daily engineer experience: workspace behavior, check-in/check-out discipline, start parts and templates, family table strategy, naming and numbering enforced by the system instead of by memory, and publishing that produces the drawings and viewables downstream consumers actually need.

SolidWorks and multi-CAD reality

Most manufacturers don't run one CAD tool. Acquisitions, supplier data, ECAD, and history mean Windchill has to manage SolidWorks and other formats alongside Creo — via Workgroup Manager, with structures, references and revisions intact. Multi-CAD is where data management gets genuinely hard, and it's where generic implementation partners quietly under-scope.

CAD data migration and cleanup

Years of shared-drive CAD comes with duplicates, broken references, and versions nobody trusts. Moving it into Windchill as-is preserves the chaos with better permissions. We treat CAD migration the way we treat every migration: decide what earns its way in, clean it on the way, and validate that what landed actually opens, regenerates, and publishes.

The CAD-to-BOM bridge

The point of managing CAD in Windchill isn't storage — it's that the model structure can drive part structure. We configure the CAD-document-to-WTPart relationship so the EBOM comes from the design instead of being re-typed into a spreadsheet next to it. That's the first link in the digital thread, and it either gets built here or faked forever.
