What Is Windchill PDMLink? PTC's Product Data Management Module Explained

Eric HornManaging PartnerWhat Is PDMLink?
Windchill PDMLink is the product data management (PDM) capability at the core of PTC Windchill. It’s where engineering keeps CAD models, parts, the engineering BOM, documents and the change process, all versioned and controlled in one system.
If MPMLink answers “how do we build it?”, PDMLink answers “what exactly is it, and which version is released?”
| Key Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Full name | PTC Windchill PDMLink |
| Part of | PTC Windchill PLM platform |
| Primary function | Managing engineering product data and change |
| Key contents | CAD data, parts, engineering BOM (eBOM), documents, change objects |
| Integrates with | PTC Creo and other CAD tools, ERP, MES, quality systems |
| Users | Design engineers, CAD administrators, configuration and change managers |
What PDMLink Does
1. CAD data management
Engineers check models in and out of their workspaces, and PDMLink keeps every iteration and revision. Creo connects natively; Workgroup Managers connect other CAD tools.
2. Parts and the engineering BOM
PDMLink holds parts and their structure, the eBOM, separately from the CAD files that describe them. That separation is what lets the BOM feed ERP and MPMLink.
3. Documents
Specs, drawings, test reports and other documents live next to the parts they describe, under the same versioning and access rules.
4. Change management
Problem reports, change requests and change notices move through defined workflows, so every released change has a reason, an approver and a record. In regulated industries this is usually the part auditors care about most. (More: what is engineering change management.)
5. Lifecycle, release and access control
Objects move through lifecycle states, such as in work, under review and released, and access rules decide who can see or change what. For ITAR-controlled data, those rules carry a lot of weight. (More: ITAR compliance in PLM.)
When PDMLink Is the Right Starting Point
- Your CAD data lives on shared drives or in an old PDM tool, and nobody’s sure which file is current.
- The BOM is rebuilt by hand in ERP or Excel after every release.
- Engineering changes are tracked by email or paper, and you can’t show an auditor the history.
- You plan to add MPMLink or ERP integration later and need a clean product structure first.
Where PDMLink Implementations Go Wrong
From our implementation work, the same problems come up again and again:
Migrating the mess. Moving years of duplicate and orphaned CAD files into PDMLink without cleanup just gives you the same problem in a more expensive system.
Copying the paper process. A change workflow with eleven approval steps on paper will have eleven in Windchill too. Simplify it before you configure it.
Skipping the people. Engineers need hands-on training with their own parts, not a generic demo. If they don’t trust the workspace, they’ll keep files on their desktops.
Building the BOM structure last. If you’ll want MPMLink or an ERP integration later, decide on part and BOM conventions up front. Changing them after go-live is slow and costly.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between PDMLink and MPMLink?
PDMLink manages engineering data: CAD, parts, the engineering BOM, documents and engineering change. MPMLink manages manufacturing data: the manufacturing BOM, process plans and work instructions. MPMLink builds on the parts and BOMs held in PDMLink.
Is PDMLink the same thing as Windchill?
Close, but not quite. Windchill is the platform; PDMLink is the core product data management capability that most Windchill customers start with. Other modules, such as MPMLink, add to it.
Does PDMLink only work with PTC Creo?
No. Creo integrates natively, and PTC’s Workgroup Managers connect other CAD tools such as SOLIDWORKS, NX, CATIA and AutoCAD, so mixed-CAD teams can manage their data in one place.
Where do PDMLink implementations usually go wrong?
Messy legacy data migrated without cleanup, change processes copied from paper without simplifying them, and too little hands-on training for the engineers who use it every day.
Implementing or fixing PDMLink?
Element Consulting implements, upgrades and rescues Windchill PDMLink for aerospace & defense, medical device, industrial and automotive manufacturers, across 100+ PLM implementations since 2003.
