What Is Windchill+?
Windchill+ is PTC's SaaS (cloud) version of Windchill PLM — the same product lifecycle management platform, delivered and maintained by PTC instead of run on your own servers. Manufacturers move to Windchill+ to get off the upgrade treadmill, reduce on-premise risk, and stand up PLM faster — and increasingly, to use the migration as a forcing function to modernize their processes, not just relocate them.
Key Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
What it is | The SaaS / cloud edition of PTC Windchill |
Maintained by | PTC (not your IT team) |
Best for | SaaS-first orgs, teams behind on upgrades, first-time PLM adopters |
Main draw | No self-managed upgrades; faster to stand up; lower infrastructure burden |
Common pitfall | "Lift and shift" — moving without improving the underlying process |
Related | Windchill (on-prem), PDMLink, Windchill upgrade/migration |
Why manufacturers are moving to Windchill+
1. The maintenance burden. Most companies are quietly bad at maintaining their own PLM — not from laziness, but because "stay current" competes with every other IT priority and loses. It's common to walk into a shop running a version that's three or four years out of date. SaaS takes that weight off: PTC owns the upgrades, so you stay current automatically.
2. SaaS-first strategy. More organizations are standardizing on SaaS to reduce the risk of running on-premise enterprise systems and to stay agile. PLM is following the same path as ERP and CRM.
3. Lower barrier for first-time adopters. If you've never had PLM, you may not have the IT infrastructure or in-house expertise to run it. With Windchill+, PTC hosts and maintains the platform — so your total cost is lower because you're not building all that capability internally.
The biggest mistake: lift and shift
The worst thing you can do with a SaaS move is drag everything over unchanged. Standing up the system and migrating the data is the easy half — and it leaves every old habit intact: Excel-based part numbering, a change process nobody follows, the silos.
A migration is a rare, expensive opportunity to stop doing things the old way. New platform, new chance to fix the process underneath it. The companies that win treat the move as a transformation, not a relocation.
We wrote a full guide to making that call: The Windchill+ Migration Guide Nobody Writes — what to leave behind, what breaks, and how to make the cutover boring.
What a good Windchill+ move looks like
Start with the MVP — the minimum viable, well-configured core — then mature it through continuous improvement.
Build real change management instead of assuming adoption.
Mature the fundamentals you may have skipped (part numbering, BOM structure, change control) as part of the move.
For regulated industries, the payoff compounds: data in a connected, controlled system is inherently more audit-friendly, so streamlining the business also reduces regulatory risk.
How Element helps
Element guides manufacturers through Windchill+ adoption as a business transformation, not just a technical migration — making the decisions a "stand up the system and move your data" partner won't: maturing the process, building change management, and phasing the rollout so it sticks. Frequently Asked Questions
Is Windchill+ the same as Windchill?
Yes — it's the same Windchill PLM platform, delivered as SaaS (cloud) and maintained by PTC, rather than installed and run on your own infrastructure.
Why move Windchill to the cloud?
To stop managing your own upgrades (many on-prem systems run years out of date), reduce infrastructure burden, stay agile, and — for first-time adopters — avoid building in-house hosting and expertise.
Should we lift-and-shift to Windchill+?
Avoid a pure lift-and-shift. The migration is the best chance to fix the process underneath — part numbering, change control, adoption — rather than carry old problems into the new platform. Our migration guide covers how to run that decision.
Does Windchill+ help with compliance?
Indirectly, yes. Data in a connected, controlled SaaS environment is more audit-friendly than scattered spreadsheets and tribal knowledge — a meaningful side benefit in regulated industries like medical devices.
