Options and variants
Also called 150% BOM, configurable BOM, overloaded BOM
Options and variants is how Windchill manages configurable products: one overloaded (150%) BOM with rules, from which each customer's specific configuration is generated instead of maintaining a separate BOM for every variant.
Engineer-to-order and configure-to-order manufacturers drown in near-identical BOMs. Options and variants replaces them with one structure and a set of choices.
The work is in modeling the options and rules with sales, engineering and manufacturing together. Done right, a configured order can flow from the sales configurator (CPQ) to a valid BOM.
