Digital thread

The digital thread is the connected flow of product data across the lifecycle: requirements, design, manufacturing, quality and service linked, so a change or a question can be traced from one end to the other without re-keying data.

In practice it’s PLM, ERP, MES and quality systems connected by reliable, event-driven integrations, with clear rules about which system owns which data.

The thread breaks wherever a person holds it together: someone exports to Excel, edits, and that file becomes the real source of truth. Finding those hand-offs is usually the first job.
